A common question from new customers is whether graphene “washes out” the way some functional treatments do. It’s a fair question – most anti-odour sprays, cooling fabric softeners, and iron-on treatments lose effectiveness within 10-20 washes. Graphene apparel is built differently, and the difference is where the material sits in the fabric.

Coating vs. embedding

A topical coating is applied after the fabric is woven or knitted – it sits on the surface, held only by an adhesive layer. Every wash cycle subjects that layer to mechanical abrasion, detergent surfactants, and heat, all of which gradually break the bond. UROTEK embeds graphene particles into the fibre itself during extrusion, so the material becomes part of the fibre’s cross-section rather than a layer added on top afterward.

What actually happens inside a washing machine

A wash cycle combines three stresses at once: mechanical agitation rubs fibres against each other, surfactants lift oils and loosen bonded particles, and heat can soften adhesives. A surface coating loses a small percentage of its active material with every cycle. An embedded particle has no adhesive bond to fail – it is physically locked within the fibre and can only be lost if the fibre itself breaks down.

Getting the most wash cycles from functional fabric

Even embedded technology benefits from sensible care: wash in cold or warm water rather than hot, turn garments inside out to reduce surface friction, skip fabric softener (it coats fibres and can mask performance), and air dry or tumble dry on low. None of this is required to keep the graphene active, but it slows general fibre wear and keeps the garment performing for longer.
