When a compression sleeve conforms to a bent elbow and springs back when it straightens, that recovery comes from elastane — a synthetic fibre with stretch properties unlike any natural material. Understanding how elastane works helps explain why fit, freedom of movement, and support can co-exist in the same garment.

What elastane actually is

Elastane (also marketed as Lycra or Spandex depending on the brand) is a polyurethane-based fibre. Its molecular structure consists of long, coiled polymer chains that can be pulled apart and will return to their original length when released. This elastic recovery is not a coating or treatment — it is a fundamental property of the fibre’s chemistry. A single elastane filament can stretch to five or six times its resting length and return to its original size without deformation.

2-way versus 4-way stretch

A 2-way stretch fabric moves in one axis — typically across the width of the fabric. This is common in basic leggings and bandage-style wraps. A 4-way stretch fabric moves in both the horizontal and vertical axes simultaneously. In practice, this means the garment can extend in any direction the body moves — squatting, reaching overhead, twisting at the torso — without resistance or distortion. Stretch percentage and recovery

Not all stretch is equal. A garment might stretch 50% but recover slowly, leaving the fabric loose and sagging after an hour of wear. Recovery rate — how quickly and completely the fabric returns to its original dimensions — is as important as stretch percentage.
