How silver ions disrupt bacteria

Silver ions (Ag⁺) are positively charged particles that bind to the negatively charged cell membranes of bacteria. Once attached, they penetrate the cell wall and interfere with the bacteria’s respiratory enzymes — effectively shutting down its ability to produce energy. The bacterium cannot reproduce or survive. Because this mechanism targets basic cellular function rather than a specific biological pathway, bacteria cannot easily develop resistance to silver the way they do to conventional antibiotics.

Embedded versus surface-coated

There are two main methods for incorporating silver into fabric. Surface coating applies silver nanoparticles to the outside of finished fibres — effective initially, but the coating degrades with repeated washing and friction. Fibre-embedded silver integrates silver ions or nanoparticles directly into the polymer matrix during the manufacturing process, so the antimicrobial property is distributed throughout the fibre rather than sitting on its surface. What silver cannot replace

Silver-ion fabrics suppress bacteria — they do not replace standard washing. Sweat contains proteins, salts, and skin cells that accumulate on fabric and should be removed regularly. What silver technology eliminates is the rapid bacterial growth that causes odour between wash cycles, which is particularly valuable for compression garments, base layers, and recovery wear worn for extended periods.
