Sunscreen has an expiry date measured in hours — it wears off, rubs off, and needs reapplying. Fabric doesn’t have that problem, which is exactly why UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor) textile has become one of the most practical, low-effort tools for everyday sun protection. UROTEK builds UPF performance directly into select activewear, so protection is just something you put on, not something you remember to redo.

What UPF actually measures

UPF rates how much UV radiation a fabric blocks before it reaches your skin. A UPF 50 garment, for example, lets through roughly 1/50th of incoming UV — blocking about 98%. It’s the textile equivalent of an SPF rating, except it doesn’t sweat off, isn’t affected by how thickly you applied it, and keeps working the entire time you’re wearing it.

The engineering behind the rating

UPF isn’t usually one single trick — it’s a combination of tight, dense weaving that leaves fewer gaps for UV to pass through, fibre choice (some polymers absorb UV more naturally than cotton does), and in some cases, fabric treatments or additives that further screen out ultraviolet wavelengths. Colour and stretch also play a role: darker, less-stretched fabric generally blocks more than a thin, light, heavily stretched one.

Why it matters in Malaysia’s climate

Near the equator, UV intensity stays high and fairly constant year-round, which makes UPF less of a seasonal feature and more of a baseline requirement for anything worn outdoors — running, cycling, or a normal commute through midday sun. Built-in protection means one less thing to plan around before you walk out the door.
